Malaysia Orders 18 CAESAR Howitzers as Army Moves Into Self-Propelled Artillery Era

Malaysia has ordered 18 CAESAR self-propelled artillery systems from KNDS, with local assembly and technology transfer included as part of the country’s push to modernize artillery and strengthen domestic defence industry.

Malaysia has ordered 18 CAESAR 155mm self-propelled artillery systems from KNDS, ending years of uncertainty over the country’s long-running requirement for a modern self-propelled howitzer capability.

The agreement was formalized at Eurosatory 2026 in Paris by KNDS and its Malaysian industrial partner Advanced Defense System. The contract includes technology transfer and local assembly provisions, making the deal not only an artillery purchase but also part of Malaysia’s wider effort to strengthen its domestic defence industry.

With the order, Malaysia becomes the 15th country to acquire the CAESAR system. KNDS says more than 800 CAESAR artillery systems have already been ordered or delivered worldwide, underlining the platform’s growing position in the global wheeled artillery market.

The Malaysian Army will receive 18 CAESAR systems in a regimental configuration. The 155mm wheeled howitzer is designed for mobility, rapid deployment and quick repositioning after firing. According to KNDS, the system can fire six rounds in less than one minute, reach targets at a range of around 40 kilometers and relocate in under two and a half minutes.

That “shoot-and-scoot” ability is one of the main reasons wheeled artillery systems have become increasingly attractive to modern armies. In a battlefield shaped by drones, counter-battery radars and precision strike weapons, artillery units cannot afford to remain static after firing. The ability to fire quickly and move before being detected is now central to artillery survivability.

For Malaysia, the acquisition marks an important shift. The country has spent years trying to introduce a self-propelled artillery capability, but earlier efforts repeatedly stalled. A previous plan to acquire refurbished M109A5 self-propelled howitzers from the United States under the Excess Defense Articles programme was cancelled in 2019 amid political change and budget constraints.

The requirement later resurfaced, but the process remained uncertain. A separate push involving Slovakia’s EVA M2 was rejected by Malaysia’s defence ministry in 2024, while the broader programme continued to face delays and procurement uncertainty. The CAESAR contract now gives the Malaysian Army a clear path toward its first modern 155mm self-propelled artillery system.

The deal also expands KNDS’s existing relationship with Malaysia. In 2018, the company was involved in a programme for the supply and local assembly of 105LG lightweight towed artillery guns, also working with Malaysian industrial partners. That earlier cooperation helped establish a base for local artillery assembly and support, which the CAESAR programme is now expected to build upon.

Advanced Defense System will play a key role in the Malaysian CAESAR programme through local assembly, integration, maintenance and industrial support. This aligns with Malaysia’s National Defence Industry Policy, which aims to build a more autonomous, sustainable and resilient national defence industry.

The local industrial element matters because Malaysia is not simply buying finished guns from overseas. Through technology transfer and assembly work, Kuala Lumpur is trying to ensure that part of the know-how, sustainment base and long-term support structure remains inside the country.

Operationally, CAESAR gives the Malaysian Army a more mobile and responsive long-range firepower option than traditional towed artillery. Malaysia already operates 105LG lightweight towed guns, and it also has an ongoing requirement for additional 105mm towed howitzers. The CAESAR will sit above those systems, giving the Army a heavier 155mm self-propelled capability for longer-range fire support.

The order also places Malaysia alongside other Indo-Pacific CAESAR users. Indonesia and Thailand already operate the system, making Malaysia the third CAESAR customer in the region. That regional footprint could help support logistics, training experience and wider familiarity with the platform in Southeast Asia.

The selection of CAESAR reflects a broader trend in artillery procurement. Many countries are moving toward wheeled self-propelled guns because they offer a balance between firepower, mobility, cost and ease of deployment. Compared with tracked systems, wheeled artillery can be easier to maintain and move over long distances by road, while still delivering powerful 155mm fires.

CAESAR has also benefited from combat exposure and strong international demand. Its use in high-intensity conflict has reinforced the importance of mobility and rapid displacement, especially as artillery units face growing threats from drones and counter-battery systems.

For Malaysia, the acquisition is therefore both a capability upgrade and a procurement breakthrough. After years of cancelled plans, delays and competing proposals, the Army now has a defined system, an industrial partner and a clear path toward fielding self-propelled 155mm artillery.

The contract value has not been disclosed by KNDS. However, the strategic value is easier to define: Malaysia is finally moving from a towed-artillery-heavy force toward a more mobile artillery structure, while using the programme to deepen local defence industrial participation.

If delivered as planned, the 18 CAESAR systems will give the Malaysian Army a more survivable and responsive fire-support capability, while strengthening KNDS’s position in the Indo-Pacific artillery market.
