Lockheed Martin Unveils HIMARS FLEX as Launcher Evolves Into Multi-Mission Fires Platform
Lockheed Martin’s new HIMARS FLEX concept adds a dual-pod configuration, expanded munition compatibility and potential air defense roles, turning the combat-proven launcher into a more flexible offensive and defensive fires platform.

Lockheed Martin has unveiled HIMARS FLEX, a new modular evolution of the combat-proven High Mobility Artillery Rocket System designed to expand the launcher’s role beyond precision ground strikes and into a broader mix of offensive fires, air defense and autonomous operations.
Presented at Eurosatory 2026, HIMARS FLEX builds on the existing HIMARS family but introduces a new FLEXFires technology ecosystem and a dual-pod configuration that can significantly increase the system’s firepower. The concept is aimed at both current HIMARS operators and new customers looking for a more flexible launcher that can adapt to different mission sets without leaving the wider NATO precision fires ecosystem.
The most visible change is the dual-pod layout. A standard HIMARS launcher carries a single pod, typically loaded with six GMLRS rockets, one ATACMS missile, or other compatible munitions. HIMARS FLEX is designed to carry two pods, effectively doubling the launcher’s payload in several configurations.
According to Lockheed Martin, that means HIMARS FLEX could carry up to 12 GMLRS or ER GMLRS rockets, four Precision Strike Missiles, two ATACMS missiles, or eight PAC-3 interceptors depending on the selected loadout. The system is also being designed for compatibility with IFPC and other future air and missile defense munitions.
That makes HIMARS FLEX more than a simple “more rockets” upgrade. It turns the launcher into a platform that could shift between deep strike, area fires, missile defense and potentially counter-air roles depending on the mission. In one configuration, it could support long-range precision attacks against ground targets. In another, it could contribute to distributed air and missile defense.
This is the most important part of the concept. HIMARS became famous as a fast-moving precision strike launcher, especially after its combat use in Ukraine. But HIMARS FLEX suggests Lockheed Martin is now positioning the platform as a modular fires node that can serve both offensive and defensive roles inside a wider joint-fire-control network.
The inclusion of PAC-3 is especially notable. PAC-3 is best known as a Patriot interceptor used against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and aircraft. Integrating that class of interceptor onto a HIMARS-sized, wheeled and C-130-transportable launcher could give allied forces a more mobile and distributed air defense option than traditional large Patriot batteries.
This does not mean HIMARS FLEX replaces Patriot. A Patriot battery includes radars, command systems, launchers and a broader architecture. But if connected to external sensors and joint fire-control networks, a HIMARS FLEX launcher carrying PAC-3 could become part of a more dispersed missile defense structure. That would make it harder for an adversary to identify and destroy critical air defense assets.
The system is also designed to retain one of HIMARS’ biggest advantages: mobility. Lockheed Martin says HIMARS FLEX remains C-130 transportable on the XM1140 chassis, preserving the ability to move quickly by air and operate across dispersed locations. That matters for NATO and Indo-Pacific users who need precision fires that can be deployed rapidly and relocated before enemy forces can target them.
The “shoot-and-scoot” model remains central. HIMARS has always been valued because it can fire, move and survive in contested environments. HIMARS FLEX adds more munitions per vehicle, rapid reload potential and optional autonomy, which could allow units to deliver more effects from fewer launchers while reducing exposure time.
The autonomy element remains less clearly defined. Lockheed Martin has said FLEXFires will allow operators to scale loadouts and add autonomous capabilities without sacrificing speed or accuracy, but the company has not publicly detailed exactly how far those autonomous functions will go. At a minimum, the direction points toward more automated operations, faster mission planning and potentially reduced crew burden in high-threat environments.
For existing HIMARS customers, the modularity is likely one of the biggest selling points. Lockheed Martin is not presenting FLEX as a completely separate system that forces users to abandon current training, logistics and munitions. Instead, it is being framed as an evolutionary path: users can remain within the HIMARS ecosystem while adding new configurations, new weapons and new roles over time.
That matters because HIMARS already has a large international user base and a strong reputation. The system has logged millions of operating hours worldwide and has become one of the most recognized precision fires platforms in service. A FLEX upgrade could give current operators a way to increase capability without switching to a completely different launcher family.
The timing of the announcement is also important. European armies are rebuilding artillery and missile stocks after years of underinvestment, while the war in Ukraine has shown the importance of long-range precision fires, survivability, rapid reloads and integration with drones and sensors. At the same time, air defense demand has surged as drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles become more common on modern battlefields.
HIMARS FLEX attempts to sit at the intersection of those trends. It offers more strike capacity, compatibility with longer-range munitions such as PrSM, and a possible role in air and missile defense through PAC-3 and IFPC. In effect, Lockheed Martin is trying to turn a proven rocket artillery launcher into a multi-mission missile platform.
For NATO, interoperability is a major part of the appeal. HIMARS FLEX is being presented as compatible with existing NATO munition stockpiles, including GMLRS, ER GMLRS, PrSM, ATACMS and PAC-3. That allows allies to share logistics, training, ammunition and fire-control concepts more easily than if each country pursued separate national solutions.
The dual-pod configuration also brings HIMARS closer to the firepower density traditionally associated with heavier tracked MLRS systems, while preserving the mobility and deployability of a wheeled launcher. This could be attractive for countries that want more ready-to-fire munitions per vehicle but do not want the logistical weight of a larger tracked platform.
The concept also fits the future of distributed operations. In a conflict with a peer adversary, large centralized missile batteries and artillery formations are vulnerable. A network of smaller, mobile launchers carrying both offensive missiles and defensive interceptors could complicate enemy targeting and give commanders more options across a wider battlespace.
There are still open questions. Lockheed Martin has not fully detailed how mixed loadouts would work, whether one vehicle could carry offensive and defensive munitions at the same time in operational service, or how PAC-3 integration would be handled in terms of sensors, command networks and engagement authority. Those details will determine how revolutionary HIMARS FLEX becomes in practice.
But the direction is clear. HIMARS FLEX is not only about doubling the number of rockets on a launcher. It is about redefining what a mobile fires platform can do.
If the concept matures as advertised, HIMARS could evolve from a precision rocket artillery system into a flexible battlefield node capable of deep strike, missile defense, distributed fires and autonomous operations. For Lockheed Martin, that keeps HIMARS relevant in the next phase of NATO and allied procurement. For operators, it offers a path to more firepower and more mission flexibility without leaving a proven platform behind.
